Submission guidelines

As always, the best way to discover what a magazine is looking for is to read the magazine. That being said, The Worcester Journal is more flexible than most magazines in regards to what we will consider. Sometimes a piece of writing comes along that doesn’t fit within the traditional parameters but is simply too good to turn down. Then again, on occasion we receive pieces that need discussion and rewriting to bring them to full potential. 

So, read the Journal to see what we like, but don’t be afraid to suggest something new or to try something different.

We consider all genres. However, you should know that we are biased toward nonfiction articles that are intelligently researched, creatively presented, and brightly written. We do publish verse and fiction, but we are as mucha general-interest journal as we are a literary magazine, and we seek writing that is entertaining, moving, and instructive. This includes journalism of all kinds, memoirs, feature stories, travelogues, profiles, and reviews.

We work alongside many of our writers as they develop their work. This process often involves an initial conversation to discover what subject the writer wants to explore, what the writer is hoping to achieve, and how best to do that within the constraints and standards of the Journal. During the research and writing of the piece there is often a good deal of correspondence between the writer and the editor as the developmental editing takes place. Contributing editors assist in the process, and the editor makes all final decisions. The idea is to work with the writer as far as possible through the whole process of writing, from conception to publication and distribution.

As to length, well, the old saying goes that a piece of writing should be as long as it needs to be, which is certainly true but not particularly helpful. Keep reviews to 500-1,500 words. Memoirs and features  may be longer, but don’t abuse the privilege. What’s most important is to keep the reader in mind.

Be sure that your name is on each submission, and that you include your mailing address and a short biography.

We also publish as Journal Featured Writers authors who may have a more extensive record of publication than most. We ask Featured Writers to be willing to accept correspondence from our newer writers.

Our payment rates are probably best described as “semi-pro.” Honoraria range between $15 and $80 and depend upon various factors, including length, complexity, and research.
