 by Gloria Cadder

it’s not quite ice that stops
plants from flowering
though they still

                   grow for years
ice preserves roadkill
on yellow two-way lines

lampless, lit by moonlight

nothing will thaw
the ice by spring—unless a body
will ignite, release

the blooming bones
